What are “mega master” hearings?
Since May 2026, we received reports of “mega master hearings” (mega masters), meaning immigration courts scheduling a massive number of hearings at the same time. Often, one hundred cases per docket per judge and, at least in one court, as high as five hundred per day. It is not happening in every immigration court. However, the practice is spreading throughout the country. In Houston, we have received reports of mega masters happening at some courts.
Common observations during these mega masters were, the presence of a large crowd summoned to appear in court; lack of adequate space to house the people or for court personnel to process such crowd; confusion among people without an attorney resulting in missed roll calls and in absentia removal orders in violation of due process. In addition, mega master hearing dockets also included cases originally scheduled for an individual hearing in 2027 or 2028 but were scheduled for a master hearing during mega masters. Attorneys reported a long wait-time and lack of real purpose for these hearings.
What is an in-absentia removal order?
In absentia is a Latin phrase that means when absent. The removal order issued by the court when a respondent does not appear in court for his/her hearing is known as an in-absentia removal order. The US Government can immediately remove a person with an in-absentia removal order. Filing a motion to reopen and set aside an in-absentia removal order is not a simple task. There are deadlines and formalities to comply with and filing fees to pay.
How to avoid an in-absentia removal order?
All non-citizens in removal proceedings, with or without a court date, should be prepared to have a new court date. There are two ways to confirm a court date with the non-citizen A number in hand: (1) by checking the EOIR case status portal HERE and (2) by calling the EOIR automated case status phone number, 1-800-898-7180. An A number is a unique identifier assigned to non-citizens by the US Government (Department of Homeland Security). Be mindful, even if an online or automated phone search renders no court date; it may not necessarily mean that there is no court date. Paper notice or prior notices, if any, of hearings should not be ignored. If you need additional information about mega master dockets, call the Immigrant Resource Hotline at 1-833-468-4664, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
