June 2025 U.S. Immigration Travel Ban: Affected Countries and Things To Know

Travel Ban and Enhanced Vetting

On June 9, 2025, the Trump administration issued a new travel ban. This imposes a complete ban against some countries and enhanced vetting for travelers coming in from other countries. In this blog, we will list these countries and discuss what this ban means exactly.

What does a travel ban mean?

Simply put, travelers from the designated countries in the new travel ban will likely be denied entry to the United States or subjected to an enhanced vetting before entering the United States. In Texas, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has presence at ports of entry in major locations, airports, and cities like Brownsville, Laredo, El Paso, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston, and smaller ports of entry in cities like Conroe, Corpus Christi, San Antonio and Sugar Land. 

Who is affected by the travel ban?

Currently, the full ban applies to citizens of:

Afghanistan
Myanmar
Chad
Republic of Congo
Equatorial Guinea,
Eritrea
Haiti
Iran
Libya
Somalia
Sudan
Yemen.

A partial ban permits entry only for certain visa categories; for example, an immigrant could enter under a permitted work visa into the U.S. The partial ban applies to citizens of:

Burundi
Cuba
Laos
Sierra Leone
Togo
Turkmenistan
Venezuela

Who is NOT affected?

The ban does not apply to citizens of banned countries who were already inside the United States on or before June 8, 2025; and those who were outside of the United States with a valid visa as of June 9, 2025.

Who else is NOT affected?

The ban does not apply to lawful permanent residents (green card holders), dual nationals when traveling on a passport issued by a non-designated country, asylees, refugees, diplomatic and international organization visa holders, athletes coming to take part in the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics.

Lastly, the Attorney General or the Secretary of State can exempt a person on a case-by-case basis.

Is it safe to travel outside of the United States?

Citizens of the banned countries, regardless of any exemption from the travel ban, should prepare to be subjected to heightened vetting (detained and questioned) at CBP ports of entry. It is important to consult with an immigration attorney before traveling outside of the United States. Equally important is having in place a family preparedness plan in case of detention or denial of re-entry to the United States.
