Survivor Services in Immigration Law

SSIL

The Survivor Services in Immigration Law Program (SSIL) provides free legal services for immigrant adults, children, and families who are survivors of crime residing in Harris County.

SSIL was authorized by Harris County Commissioners Court in November 2020, recognizing the need to provide support to immigrant survivors of crime in Harris County. The support SSIL provides to these survivors helps the County fulfill its purpose to serve and protect residents.

Some victims of domestic violence and other criminal violence often do not report crimes out of fear of deportation, fear of further violence to themselves or their families, and fear their children will be taken away. Federal immigration law provides special visas to victims to encourage them to report and cooperate in the investigation and prosecution of crimes to keep our communities safe.

Eligibility

To qualify for legal representation under the SSIL Program, the applicant must:

  1. Be a survivor of crime.
  2. Be a resident of Harris County, Texas.
  3. Earn less than 80% of the median family income for the Greater Houston Area.
