20230919 - give citizenship a boost city council proclamation

Give Citizenship a Boost is part of an unprecedented public-private partnership to help eligible Houston immigrants apply for citizenship. HILSC’s partners in the endeavor are the City of Houston, Harris County, Houston Endowment, National Partnership for New Americans (NPNA), and other local nonprofit organizations: Mi Familia Vota, Woori Juntos, OCA-Greater Houston, and SAAVETX Education.

In 2023, Migration Policy Institute projected that almost 350,000 lawful permanent residents (“green-card holders”) have accrued sufficient residency to apply for citizenship, yet only a fraction has successfully done so. Financial challenges and language barriers are the most common hurdles identified for eligible immigrants. On April 1, 2024, the cost for applying for citizenship has increased from $725 to $760 (if individuals are seeking reduced fee and must file on paper). To help low-to-moderate-income individuals afford the expensive application fees, HILSC partners with several immigration service providers to channel up to $1.5 million grant provided by Houston Endowment to help defray the high cost of citizenship application. Together with our partners serving diverse immigrant communities, we will make citizenship attainable.
