HILSC launched the Connect for Healthcare project in the fall of 2020 striving to thaw the chilling effects caused by the 2019 “public charge” regulation which threatened to disqualify immigrants for permanent immigration status for use of certain public benefits. Using an innovative multidisciplinary approach, Connect for Healthcare leverages the unique relationship and access to the community of each partnering organization that comprises legal services, benefits enrollment, healthcare, organizing and advocacy entities to create a “no wrong door” network to connect immigrants with healthcare and benefits.

During the planning year, the Connect for Healthcare partners developed a common language about access barriers immigrants face. The partners curated a series of short videos that demystify immigrants’ eligibility for benefits and perceived immigration consequences, eligibility and application process for Harris Health, ways to find a doctor, and the importance of advocacy in securing rights and protecting health.

In years two and three, the Cohort created and implemented a creative way to build an immigrant-friendly healthcare culture by introducing future doctors to the challenges immigrants face in accessing healthcare and safety net programs through a field observation program where medical residents observe at an agency that assists immigrants with benefits enrollment. We are expanding this program to nursing students to create an immigrant-friendly healthcare system from the front desk to the lead doctor. Connect for Healthcare also added the Alliance for Community Assistance Ministries to develop a robust case management network to strengthen the collaboration and knowledge base to help immigrants overcome the immigration barrier as a social determinant of health.
